Choosing candle wax can be tricky. It depends on several factors, like what type of candle you would like to make, texture desired, and, mostly importantly, if you desire to make an all natural product.
Most candles you buy at the store are made of paraffin unless otherwise specified. So let’s talk wax!
Soy Wax
Soy wax is a popular choice if you want to make natural candles. This wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil and is usually available in flakes. Pillar and molds are out of the question for soy wax since it’s a soft wax even after the candle has set. This wax is best when making container candles, tins, votives, tealights, and tarts.
Another thing to keep in mind with this wax is that color won’t dissolve in soy wax and be absorbed like in other waxes. Instead the combination of this color will result in a pastel look. If a darker color is what you are looking for, try using extra color for a more vibrant look.
Parafix Wax
Paraffin wax is extremely versatile and common today in most commercial candles. This wax is white in color, odorless petroleum by-product of the oil refinement process and is available in many forms. It has a higher melting point, which is a harder wax that works well when creating pillars and votives.
Despite its popularity, paraffin is not preferred by those who value all natural products due to its relation to petroleum, as the claim that the fumes emitted by burning a paraffin-wax candle could be harmful and toxic.
With that being said, here at Monarca Essentials choose to use soy wax.
